The Motherhood Journey: Finding Ways to Thrive

Have you noticed that motherhood is often described as a form of ‘survival’, where making it through each day is just one long, constant battle against your own tiredness, your little one’s tantrums, and that horrible feeling of being totally out of control?

If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “I just need to make it through the day,” then you know what I mean!

In some ways, it’s not surprising. After all, being a parent is like being on an overwhelming rollercoaster of emotions — a rollercoaster that you won’t be able to get off for a very, very long time.

But there ARE ways to turn ‘surviving’ into ‘thriving’, especially when it comes to balancing your own needs with your family’s needs!

Making time for yourself (without feeling guilty!) is a key part of that.

If someone else can watch your baby for you, it’s important to schedule ‘chill’ periods — to read a book, go for a swim, catch up with friends, whatever — as well as enjoy some well-deserved one-on-one time with your partner, if you have one.

Creating a family calendar might really help you to find a better balance with this, as you can map out each week (events, activities, play dates, working hours) and plan how to spend your time in advance.

If your stress predominantly stems from work and you’re keen to think outside the box, there are also plenty of creative ways you can balance motherhood with a career, like turning your experiences as a mother into entrepreneurship.

A ‘thriving’ mindset won’t just make your life easier, but will also make your little one’s life a bit easier as well. After all, if you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed, how are they going to be feeling?

At the same time, it is a great idea to start an online blog. Not only will you get to relive your little one’s adventures every day or week, but when they get older, they will be able to enjoy reading it and looking at all the pictures too. Who knows, you may even end up being able to help other young parents with their questions on parenthood. You could even develop the blog into an educational platform as a small business later down the line!

If you’re looking to find a better balance for both you and baby, come and join me at my next workshop: Make Motherhood Count! Journeying Through Motherhood, with my three guest speakers.

Ange Dove, master copywriter, small business owner, mentor and mother of two teenagers, will be sharing everything you need to know about writing down the best bits of baby’s first year and beyond (and how to get people to read your blog once you’ve written it!).

Michelle Hon, a self-confessed ‘mummypreneur’, author, blogger and mother of 3, will be sharing a whole host of useful tips on balancing career with family. Michelle started her own motherhood journey as a lifestyle blogger before she branched into the baby-planning business, and now helps expectant mothers to prepare for the arrival of their babies. Not only will she share her own story of success with you, she’ll also explain how you can recreate it and find your own ways to thrive as a new mum!

In addition, Yeo Sha-En, psychologist and founder of Positive Education (an awesome organisation that aims to help children cope with the symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety) will be answering some of the common questions you might have as your little one grows, like: Why isn’t my child listening to me? Why are they giving up so easily? Why are they having another tantrum? And how can I support them and help them to thrive, too?

We’ll be handing out goodie bags worth up to $180 and holding a lucky draw with some great prizes for expecting and new parents. See you there!
